Experiments with Whistling Machines

چکیده
This text describes a series of experiments performed with a machine capable of synthesizing human whistles and canary song. We call this device The Universal Whistling Machine (U.W.M). It senses the presence of living creatures in its vicinity and attracts them with a signature whistle. Given a response whistle, U.W.M. counters with its own composition, based on a time-frequency analysis of the original. A previous paper [1] described the whistle synthesis and U.W.M. with regards to language representation. Here we give a broad overview of all issues U.W.M touches upon, including animal-machine interaction.

One of the most unusual ictal automatisms reported is whistling. Two patients, both males, are described who had prominent whistling as a component of their complex partial seizures. Both had temporal lobe epilepsy with resolution of seizures after a temporal lobectomy. Ictal whistling appears to localize to the temporal lobe but may not be useful for lateralization.

In this paper a new auditory model-based transcriber of vocal melodic queries is presented. Our experiments show that the new system can transcribe queries with an accuracy between 76 % (whistling) and 85 % (singing with syllables), and that it outperforms four state-of-the-art systems it was compared with.
